Ed Murphy, a West Virginia native who grew up in the 70's and 80's at the northern end of the Appalachain highway in Detroit MI, was always drawn to the outdoors, exploration and adventure.
I came to know Jesus at the Wick Road Baptist Church in Taylor, MI. I was baptized and married to Kathy at that Church, shortly before setting out for Bible college in Springfield MO. The adventure of getting married at 18 lives on!
My adventures and explorations have sustained my relationship with God for over 4 decades. The hunting, shooting, camping, fishing, boating, snorkeling and a variety of random experiences have enriched the adventure in spiritual life. Which is what it is designed to do in us!
The joy in life, including the struggles and issues of family, career is better understood when framed in the context of adventure in the wilderness. Our walk with Jesus is a backpacking trip in the Rockies, not a stroll down the lane.
My adventures have taken me on some wild rides that in many cases left me bewildered. As Kathy and I started our family we experienced a miscarriage, a NICU and the impact of very different families of origin. Then in childrearing, the wonderful experiences of guiding our protege through puberty, teen years, college and career years, and the marriages and families of their own. If it wasn't for the grandkids I would question my success!
My career was spent basically in 2 places in the food service industry, Red Lobster and the Federal Prison System. It should be noted that I did 25 years in prison... for the retirement! Both were trades positions with high technical requirements and entrenched in people rich environments. It was an epic adventure.
My current adventure is post career. Following the Holy Spirit we moved from MI to FL, relaunching Men Daring Greatly. I started MDG as an adventure ministry. It has gone through several iterations and as I grow it does as well. I currently host a Wild at Heart Weekend, a weekly Fire and a twice monthly Foundry gathering. We are prayerfully considering expanding into a marriage ministry and a ministry aimed at 25-40 year old men. I also am engaged as a pulpit supply preacher/teacher.
I host ocean and swamp adventures in FL and hunting and fishing camps in WV. I do individual discipleship in person, on the phone and Zoom. My current roster is topped by my 8 grandkids who are learning a variety of age appropriate outdoor skills and being discipled into adventurous followers and lovers of Jesus. However we would be blessed to add you into any stream of ministry you feel a desire to pursue.
I look forward to how we might partner for a season of adventure, in the outdoors and on our journey with or toward Jesus!
